News brief: Police to begin checking for unlicensed dogs in Centralia

The Centralia Police Department will begin canvassing neighborhoods on Sunday looking for unlicensed dogs and their owners.

Owners of unlicensed dogs will be given an opportunity to buy a license, but those who don’t could face a fine of $119, according to the Centralia Police Department.

The annual fee is $30 for each dog older than two months old, although it is only $10 if the animal is spayed or neutered, according to police.

However, for those not already in compliance, a $20 late fee will apply, according to officer John Panco.

Proof of current rabies vaccination (with an expiration date) is required to get the license, according to Panco.

Panco said the push is not in response to last week’s attack by a pair of dogs on a more than a dozen chickens on West Seventh Street, but an annual canvassing by the department to make sure dogs are licensed, as required by city ordinance.

For more information, visit the city’s website.

CLARIFICATION: This was updated Wednesday April 11, 2012 at 8:55 a.m. to distinguish the usual fee for licensing dogs and the added late fee if licenses are not purchased by the renewal deadline of Feb. 1.

or better yet they could round up Drug Dealers that have been under the radar WAY TOO DAMN LONG…Or better yet watch these people that continue to drive while holding their phone to their ear..YES I STILL SEE PEOPLE DOING THAT…Then they blow right through crosswalks and don’t let pedestrians cross..Yes the crosswalks that don’t have redlights.

Centralia is broke ! They need the money to pay for all the new cso’s.and buy more cop cars.Just like handing out parking tickets now.Do they ever get together and do anything for the community? O sorry they shop with a cop!Do you think they will try to open the out door pool for the kids and then they ask for money for flower baskets! DON’T get me wrong. I love flowers! Just because a dog has a license, doesn’t mean it won’t bite you! I suppose the officer for trolling on sunday will get extra pay because it is the weekend. and why won’t they let the kids go on a field trip to the mellon street facility? they do not want the public to see and know what they are doing. training facility my butt! they are so scared that they have to have lemay’s trash call in 15 minutes before they get there to open the gate. why don’t they spend their sunday checking in on registered sex offenders and tweekers!

I actually say that it is about time. Centralia is polluted with dogs that bite innocent people walking their own pets peacefully, and kids too. One of my tenants was walking her dogs and got attacked by a loose pit that didn’t have its shots and wasn’t registered. You want an animal? Be responsible pet owners and be accountable.
Don’t think that Centralia Police Department isn’t doing anything but searching for dogs; they’re patrolling as well. City Ordnance needs to be taken action on anyways, this town is looking disgusting!

  5. TIREDOFIT says:

What a great use of taxpayer dollars. Hunt down dogs. What a joke.

  6. unbiased says:

They freakin amaze me! Yeah go dog hunting. Maybe they can get that right and not have to lie about it. On second thought tho, has anybody ever heard of an annual unlicensed dog hunt?

  7. theamish1 says:

why dont they go around looking for illegal aliens instead of looking for unlicensed dogs.

  8. icallbullshit says:

That explains the guys in military gear at the melon street station today. For dogs ya.
