The state Department of Transportation closed the state Route 508 South Fork Newaukum Bridge to all traffic this afternoon when a routine inspection found significant corrosion on the bridge girders.

The highway will be closed there for emergency repairs until further notice, according to DOT.

Drivers should use U.S. Highway 12 to get to their destinations, DOT spokesperson Abbi Russell said.

The bridge is five miles east of Onalaska, just east of Centralia-Alpha Road.

There is no estimated timeframe yet for the repairs, according to Russell.

Eastbound traffic can take Leonard Road to U.S. Highway 12. Westbound traffic can take Cinebar Road to Silver Creek Road (state Route 122) to U.S. Highway 12.

It’s the bridge at Pigeon Springs. It has been in disrepair for 30 years. Typical bull from the highway dept.

is this the one at Bear Canyon?

Routine inspection my butt, that bridge has been messed up for awhile, I learned some time ago from EMS that this bridge was in bad repair and in danger of collapsing. Where’s those shovel ready jobs to repair our roads and bridges? Liars!

  4. Free Air says:

There’s absolutely no way this crumbling excuse for a bridge would still be in use if it were in sight of Olympia.

Replace it. Pull the mothballed bridge section that runs over Hwy. 12 at fern gap if needed, but replace it! No more bandages!

  5. Dino Riccitti says:

I liv about a half mile east of this. What a pain, I hope they can do a temporary fix quick!

That dangerous corner bridge has been falling off in chunks for the past couple of years. That whole thing needs to be replaced, not another patch work done.
