“Have two ways out” was the theme of this year’s countywide fire safety poster contest, the grand champion winners of which were announced this weekend.

School children around Lewis County participated and prizes were awarded on Saturday by Riverside Fire Authority Assistant Chief Rick Mack at the Centralia Outlet mall, according to Napavine-area Fire Lt. Laura Hanson.

More than 120 first place posters were displayed at the mall.

The grand champions – one from each grade level – will get their names engraved on the “Capt. Brian Slater Ward” plaque which is permanently displayed at the Chehalis Fire Department.

Assistant Chief Mack says the top six winners this year are:

• First grade: Dakota Lafferty, Ford’s Prairie Elementary, Ms. Rakes’ class
• Second grade: Ben Puris, Jefferson Lincoln Elementary, Ms. Nederland class
• Third grade: Makensee Taliaferro-Bouge, of Napavine Elementary, Ms. Teitzel’s class
• Fourth grade: Kollin Jurek, of Pe Ell Elementary, Ms. Jurek’s class
• Fifth grade: Taya McCallum, of St Joseph Catholic School, Ms. Cleary’s class
• Sixth grade: Emily Elswick, of White Pass Elementary, Ms. Keniston’s class

  1. Steven what do you mean 1-800 number. You think I’m crazy because I pointed out that posting your homes layout in a Public Place is the OK thing to do. After all the Sheriff’s Department Claims that crime is on the rise and Home Invasion crimes have become a serious problem in America. So by reffering to the 1-800 number your calling me crazy because I’m pointing out the facts. think my statement is not true here are the facts. http://uptownmessenger.com/2012/07/home-invasion-robbery-on-broadway-may-have-targeted-high-profile-tulane-football-player/ Home invasions are on the Rise the FBI’s own data proves this. But I need to call a 1-800 # Thanks Steven. I’ll do that, any suggestions for some good help?

  2. Steven says:

DIRTY COP ENFORCER…you know their are 1-800 numbers where you can get some free counseling over the phone.

  3. Yup says:

A few years ago Lewis County wanted to have the home layout of all people with “exotic” animals, for “safety” reasons. How dangerous that would be in the wrong hands! Good for the kiddos to know their way out, but golly, what happened to security??

  4. commoncents says:

So…. back to the realm of sanity. Glad to see kids are learning basic fire safety. Knowing how to get out of a burning building saves countless lives every year.

    Way to go kiddos!!!

  5. The fire fighter on the right hand side of the picture last year wanted all residential homes to have automatic fire suppression equipment in every home, but the Centralia City Council shot him down. Installing automatic fire suppression equipment in our homes would of been about ten thousands dollars a pop. These clowns inside the City Government are blinded by the Do Gooder Syndrome!

  6. Like I said the Government Training Camp, Now take little Johnny in to get his Vaccine, the Autism has not kicked in from the last shot!

  7. mendez says:

Good lord… does the scope of your asininity never end?

  8. MorningCoffee says:

DCE, we finally agree on some things. I also think it invasive for all people whenever they “like” a page on Facebook… all those “liked” sites now have whatever it is that folks put on their FB profiles… dates, locations, where you go, when you do it, who you’re with, family trees. Whenever someone tags you in a photo with location info, etc, etc, etc. Folks you’ve opened up your lives to all those “interests” that you’ve “liked.” I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but what better way for ANY marketer OR agency to get into your lives than for you to VOLUNTARILY invite them in.

On the subject of the Fire Escape Plan… I’m sure it was a well intended project, but DCE is right… now the home’s layout is posted for all to see….. UNLESS, they were instructed to use fictitious layouts. (However, DCE, I don’t see it as a conspiracy by the Sheriff’s dept to obtain people’s home layouts… come on now.)

  9. Falsetto says:

They even tell you if they have windows on the unoccupied rooms! A crazy little bonanza of information there. Thanks you awesome and intelligent civic leaders of Lewis County. Once again, you have outdone yourselves. Go ahead and give yourself a standing ovation and hearty slap on the back if you haven’t already done so, several time.

  10. Huh? says:

Darn it all, #1 my first thought was “great, now everyone knows the layout of that kid’s home”, and #2 DCE beat me to it and we agree on it!

  11. Now the Sheriff’s Department has a layout of everyones home in the name of fire safety.. Of Course and lets upload our face book info also. Look at the control grid being built by the Government Training Camps Opps I meant schools. Also a weirdo can just go to the mall and see where your little kids room is now. Great Idea……
