Twenty-four-year-old Chehalis man shoots, wrestles with intruder

CHEHALIS – A rural Chehalis resident shot and injured an intruder outside his bedroom door overnight.

Deputies were called about 4:45 a.m. to the 400 block of Highway 603 where the 24-year-old resident said he was asleep with his wife and heard someone talking outside, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

He armed himself with a pistol and a subject somehow got inside, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The suspect, Brian L. Creed, 51, of Chehalis entered the residence and started down the hallway towards the homeowner who was standing in front of his bedroom door to protect his wife in their bedroom,” the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.

Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said the resident told Creed to stop, but Creed charged him.

The resident fired one shot but was then tackled; the resident broke free and held Creed at gunpoint until deputies arrived shortly after 5 a.m., according to Brown.

The sheriff’s office says Creed had been using methamphetamine earlier; he recently moved into a house nearby off Nix Road.

Brown said the intruder was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in stable condition. The 24-year-old resident was reportedly uninjured.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital said Creed is in critical condition.

Detectives were on the scene this morning conducting an investigation, according to Brown.

Sheriff Steve Mansfield scheduled a news conference for tomorrow and issued a prepared statement.

“My office works very hard in ensuring people feel safe and secure in Lewis County, however; people have to be prepared to protect themselves in situations like this in their own homes,” Mansfield stated. “Our response times are as fast we can make them but there may be a time when you are by yourself and you are forced to make a life or death decision to protect yourself and your family, like this man did.”

I think you can be fairly confident the homeowner will be charged with aggravated assault or something equally stupid. Then he will be offered a plea to third degree assault, a class C felony. The intruder is likely to get thirty days, although he might get off by claiming self defense. I am surprised his family isn’t all over the news telling us what a nice guy he is. Maybe the saving that for the civil lawsuit against the homeowner.

Actually, I agree with what Steve Mansfield said, “…he could have fired sooner, he could have fired more often, and he could have used a better brand of ammunition.”

The homeowner could use the training offered by an advertiser on this site.

Like Greg said… Why do the folks of this state keep putting the 2 ignoramuses in the federal senate seats? Both of them gals would strip us of these God givin wright to defend ourselves and loved one’s in 2 seconds if givin the chance. Wake up folks! I totally agree with sheriff Mansfield, we ALL need to be ready and have a plan. In the 15 or so minutes response time it took in this situation… It could have ended up a multiple homicide if he hadn’t had a gun!

You have the devine right to protect yourself and your offspring. I am a lady who carries a pink .357 and it might be “cute” but it will get the attention of anyone wishing me or my family harm.

Every cop worth his salt will tell you that “when seconds count, the police are minutes away”… you have an obligation to your family to protect them by any lawful means necessary. This young man upheld his obligation as a husband and a father. A mother and her children should expect no less. A single Mom should expect to be able to protect herself and her loved ones from any intruder or that idiot ex who isn’t impressed by the restraining order.

There are those who would tell us that were we to put away our means of protection, all violence would cease and evil people would simply take our stuff and leave us alone…the metro dwellers up north tell us that we would be safer selling our guns to the government for a chance to by cheap products from internet retailers, who donate money to the same people who would take your rights in the first place. If you are foolish enough to buy into this nonesense, then by all means, follow through and submit to the ineptocracy that is taking over this country, but don’t claim ignorance when you fnd yourself at the mercy of the wolf, while your “protector” tries to negotiate standing in a puddle of their own urine.

BTW, You folks realize of course that if the two idiots you keep electing to the U.S. Senate had their way…this could never happen again, right? If they had their way the homeowner in this story would have had no means of stand off protection. So how many times have those two been re-elected? And why exactly is that? Is there a conservative in this state capable of unseating either of those androgynous fools?…or is that too much to ask?

    I guess there’s always Idaho.

What a great job this young man did to protect his family. If the story is correct, this 24 year old displayed great restraint holding the intruder at gun point after being attacked in his own home at night. It’s always easy to say what you would do in a life and death situation, I would hope I would perform this well to protect my family. His family and wife should be proud.
Hand guns are great for people that have been trained; I personally like the short barrel 12 gauge. You never know, but I doubt if this idiot could have tackled him if he had been shot with 12 gauge at short range. I will never understand people who want to limit the right of good people to protect ourselves. Our Police and prosecutors do their best for the most part, but they are limited by too many laws that protect the truly evil bad guys. This guy should never see the light of day.
On the other hand, our drug laws do not work. “The sheriff’s office says Creed had been using methamphetamine earlier” I thought using meth was against the law? Let me be very clear, I hate drugs and pot. It ruins people lives along with their families. But spending billions on the drug war has failed. I don’t want pay for it. Ending the drug war will allow us to use that money to put people like Creed and John Booth in prison for good.

No thanks, you’re doing a fine job! I don’t like your lack of criticism though. Your thinking skills could use some improvement.

Lets hope that this man gets charged properly by the prosecutor, and if so and found guilty he will get the time for his crime per his offender score, providing he has one. and lets hope that the home owner doesn’t get charged with assault, since it did happen in side his house and not out side in the yard, there should be no charges. FYI>>>>>most of the car prowl reports come out of Centralia, not Morton, and as the cops do everywhere by time they arrive there is no one around to be found.

  9. GuiltyBystander says:

I wonder if Jonathan Meyer is already working on plea bargains for the intruder AND the homeowner?

If you are looking for handgun training, I have it on good authority the people who advertise here on Lewis County Sirens have a pretty good reputation. Check them out.

Wow, I actually agree with you OLJ !!! Hell musta froze over. I agree , I am so tired of these parasites. At least fix ’em so they do not breed. Their childrens suffering is unimaginable. They pay their whole lives for what these creeps do to them. And they get a check!!! I just do not have any sympathy for any of them. Anyway if he lives , some scumbag lawyer will take his case and sue that poor guy who shot him. Remember what happened last year on 508? These people rob and rob and they get a slap on the hand, in Morton they actually sell the stuff they steal right out in the open at yard sales. Everyone knows it and they get away with it. The largest industry in Morton is car prowling and burglary. They are everywhere like cockroaches.

    Chris,
I have owned handguns for many years and I have a permit to carry concealed. I strongly urge you to take courses on how to handle. Firearm as well as how to shoot. Owning/carrying a firearm comes with responsibility. Also like anything else the more you practice the better you get.

  14. OldLongJohnson says:

I hope that tweeker dies, or at least has to live the rest of his life in agony.

    Fuck him.

I had thought about getting a gun after the sandy hook school shooting but after this I am sure i’m going to buy one especially if Sheriff Steve Mansfield says we should get a gun. “when you are by yourself and you are forced to make a life or death decision to protect yourself and your family, like this man did.”
