Sharyn’s Sirens: Daily police and fire roundup

Updated at 1:28 p.m.

SCUFFLE WITH POLICE ENDS WITH ARREST

• A 44-year-old man was arrested for third-degree assault after he allegedly fought with an officer who was attempting to detain him about 8 p.m. yesterday at the 1500 block of Harrison Avenue in Centralia. Mitchell W. Sinclair, of Centralia, was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department. Officers planned to also suggest charges of resisting arrest and obstruction, according to police. Sinclair is going to be released from jail and not charged with a felony, pending further investigation, according to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office.

DON’T LOOK AT THOSE BRASS KNUCKLES ON MY CAR SEAT

• A 52-year-old Chehalis man was arrested about 3 o’clock this morning after contact with an officer on the 600 block of West Main Street in Chehalis when he dropped a set of brass knuckles on the seat of his vehicle as he was getting out. Rick A. Rowland was in trouble for a suspended driver’s license, being in the company of a female who had a no-contact order against him and then also unlawful possession of a weapon, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

NO TOKING IN PUBLIC

• Police were called to Garbe’s Tavern on the 300 block of Northwest Chehalis Avenue about 8:45 p.m. yesterday to an inquiry about whether it was okay for someone to be smoking pot inside the bar. It’s not clear if anyone actually was, but no, it is not allowed under the new marijuana law, Chehalis police detective Sgt. Gary Wilson said.

TWIN CITY TOWN CENTER LOST AND FOUND

VANDALISM

• Someone spray painted graffiti on a dumpster in an alley near the 900 block of South Pearl Street in Centralia, according to a report made to police abut 3 p.m. yesterday.

NURSE SUSPENDED UNTIL LEARNING ANGER MANAGEMENT

• The state Department of Health reported yesterday it suspended certified nursing assistant Miranda M. Klemola for becoming impatient with an 83-year-old resident of a skilled nursing facility while she was helping take him to the bathroom and yelled at him for not standing up straight, used profanity and pushed him down onto the commode. He was not hurt. It happened a year ago. Klemola, who is in her early 30s and either lived or worked in Lewis County, agreed late last month that she exhibited unprofessional conduct and would take five hours of specific nursing courses, including anger management, before petitioning for reinstatement of her credentials, according to documents filed with Department of Health. The disciplining authority considered Klemola’s potential for successful rehabilitation in reaching resolution of the matter. No criminal behavior was alleged.

AND MORE …

• Plus various warrant arrests, fender benders, complaints about neighbors or tenants, smoking too close to someone else’s doorway, cars getting kicked, neighbor’s dog peeing on a porch, punching ex-boyfriend in the face for name-calling, found mountain bike, shoplifting, failing to register as a sex offender …

I agree with OLJ, SadCity. The First Amendment only prevents the government from limiting free speech, not a privately-held website like this one. Actually, I think Sharyn gives us a lot of leeway on the message boards and allows much more cursing than most. She only starts stepping in when comments between posters get particularly nasty.

BTW, while one could define news as “gossip” to a point in certain stories, that’s not what it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to disseminate what happened first and foremost…THEN it might delve into speculation from people involved with the story. That’s legit. A good reporter will try to make sure their own opinion is not evident in a story because doing so intentionally blurs the line between “news” and “opinion” and turns journalism into advocacy.

@”Confused as to what we have the right to say’

You have the right to say anything you want. However, the lovely Sharon has the right to decide who can or can’t post. It’s her prerogative ultimately. We may live in a democratic society, but those rules don’t apply to a person’s website. They can pick and choose any comment she wants.

That being said, and I speak from experience, she will most likely let you post your comments if they are free from religious attacks and flaming.

“Flaming” is when someone makes a post online that is intended to provoke and otherwise add nothing to the conversation. It’s probably best to remain on-topic as well.

It’s great to be able to share your opinion, regardless if other people agree with you or not. But in the end, the administrator has the final say.

    Good luck.

  3. SadCity says:

What decides what comments get posted ass which are sensored? Especially even there’s not even curses in them. Confused as to what we have the right to say

  4. SadCity says:

Also Lisarae I’m pretty sure the facility isn’t listed in this article or in my comment so I don’t think that qualifies as slander. And really why are you so worried about what I’m saying instead of what was done to this poor old man? Sounds as if your priorities are a bit mixed up. Or afe you thay bored that your goal was to start a comment posting fight about a total strangers opinion on the dregs of Lewis County? FB is always good if you’re looking for drama.

  5. Accountability please says:

Some of you may feel this story isn’t news worthy, but making this information public (as it was also done on the Dept. of Health’s website) helps to educate the public in many ways from bringing attention to elder abuse to letting our community know about those that have harmed others. Case in point: As the parents of children in little league my wife and I would like to know how Mandy Klemola is even a board member of Centralia little league if this incident of abuse was under review. Isn’t this incident worthy of being a flag on a background check? Was someone not thorough in the background checks? Did a background check even occur? Or could it be that Mandy Klemola just did not disclose possible pending charges on the mandatory background check form for ALL volunteers and coaches? If this was over a year ago and she is a new board member this year, we are really curious what type of abuse is seen as admissable by those conducting background checks as it just doesn’t add up that an investigation into suspected abuse involving the Washington State Department of Health would not cause some sort of flag. Criminal charges or not, Ms. Klemola should have disclosed this information (if she did not) and if she hide this abuse from the board, she should be held accountable for intentialy being fraudulent about her history. Furthermore, this incident makes a parent ask, if this fell through the cracks, what else potentially has when it comes to looking into a volunteer’s background? We are not trying to throw Ms. Klemola or little league under the bus, we just feel that these are the questions any parent should be asking that puts trust into an organization to keep our children safe in the world we live in today. We are not saying that people can’t make mistakes and learn from them. As parents it just make you wonder if adequate measures are being put into place so that any unscrupulous activity apart of a person’s background are properly looked into. Lastly, if this was flown under the radar, we would hope in the future Centralia little league learns from this mishap and looks into and re-examines their background check policy, procedures, and forms because this in one way or another is an epic failure to our community’s children. Not to mention this whole situation is an incredible injustice to the elderly man that was abused in this incident.

  6. Lisarae says:

    P.S. A Certified Nursing Assistant, is not a nurse~

  7. Lisarae says:

@ Sad City, any medical facility I have ever worked at DOES do drug testing. Ummm, last I checked, having an anger management problem doesnt make one guilty of having a drug habit either. Is it your job to determine this woman is guilty of drug use? I make no excuse for her behavior, but are you not spreading gossip accusing her of drug use, and her employer of employing tweekers? Your accusation is bordering on slander~

  8. mesays says:

BTW just think if it was a child who couldn’t speak up

  9. mesays says:

How many other patients were abused by the same nurse? Losing the license is not enough. She should never be allowed to work in the health care field..I worked/volunteered in a Nursing home, that had very high standards. This would not of been taken so lightly. How many times do abusers get their hands slap before killing someone? Too Many.

  10. SadCity says:

@Really…umm last time I checked NONE of the stories in the sirens say who’s guilty and who’s falsely accused, unless its a big case the news is following like Reeder or Booth…and even then the stories of their accusations were printed first. News is gossip, I suppose, and its not the reporters job to determine who’s innocent and who’s guilty…that’s where the court system (as flawed as it is) comes in. It is what it is. I’m not sure why you read it if you don’t want to hear the gossip.
You want some gossip? It’s a wonder that “skilled nursing facility” doesn’t do drug testing…So sad tweakers are allowed to take care of the elderly. If that were my grandpa I’d knock her teeth out.

  11. DALTON says:

I AGREE WITH MESAYS 100% THAT IS SO HATEFUL AND NO DOUBT VERY SCARRY FOR THAT POOR MAN. SHE WAS HIRED TO TAKE CARE OF THEM NOT TO DEMEAN THEM. THERE HELPLESS AND PROBABLY SCARED TO SAY ANYTHING DAMN IT YOU WANT TO ACT LIKE A BAD ASS TOA ELDERLY PERSON WHO CANT DEFEND HIMSELF OH YOU ARE WAY COOL” MAKE SURE U TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS HOW TUFF” YOU ARE YOUR DAY IS COMING!

  12. REALLY says:

    @123MEMEME

I have zero personal attachment to that particular story, just chose it as an example. I just feel like no matter what, the media sways the public opinion on wether a person is guilty or innocent of a crime before a trial has even happened. It should be innocent until PROVEN guilty by a COURT OF LAW. Not Lewis County Sirens. And maybe the nursing case is a bad example.

  13. 123mememe says:

@Really, how about the sex offender case? No name was mentioned there, and even though CoolLink offered up a name there was still no city listed. What if it was on the street over from you? What if it is your new neighbor? Seems like a name would be better for that case, IMHO.

Most likely, you have a personal issue with the story. If that is the case, don’t read the news whether or not your family has admitted to wrongdoing. At least Klemola “agreed late last month that she exhibited unprofessional conduct”. You couldn’t even keep your comments PG.

  14. Really says:

I just think that stories naming people in the public should not be printed unless there has been criminal charges filed and a guilty verdict handed down. It is “elder abuse” and deplorable, but a person should not be tried by the media. Just because someone has been accused of something does not make it true.

  15. GuiltyBystander says:

You seem to be awfully worked up about a “non-story” with no charges, Really. Why didn’t you go off on stories about the pot smoking at Garbe’s or the 44-year-old guy fighting with a cop? No charges in either case, but you cherry-picked the nursing home abuse story instead. Interesting…

  16. mesays says:

It’s called “Elder Abuse” and she should go to jail for that. If any of us treated a elderly person like that and were turned into the authorties, you bet your bottom dollar we would of been arrested.

  17. OldLongJohnson says:

    i.e. Really:

It’s not gossip if it’s fact. Get your gossip straight!

  18. No Really? says:

    In response to Really:

This is public information through the Dept. of Health and is valuable to folks who may want to hire an independent care provider for a family member or for themselves. If this person did this I would want to know if I was hiring someone to take care of a family member. So no it is not gossip. It may not have been a criminal action but this person was WAY in the wrong for their actions and there are consequences for that such as: conditions on their license, suspension of license and revocation of license. How would you feel if it was your family that was treated with such inhumanity? Before you judge maybe do your research.

  19. Really says:

    RE: Nurse suspension.

If there was no criminal conduct, why the fuck are you printing it? This website is a gossip blog.

  20. TheresACoolLinkonThisPage says:

Here and there: There is a great link on the sidebar of this page that takes you to the Lewis County Jail Roster… under the Bookings tab, you will see a list of names, if you click on the name, you will see the charge for which they were arrested. It appears that the charge you are looking for is this one:

TOOLEY, ZACHARIAH GRANT 238208 Feb 13 3:19 PM
Arrest Date Arresting Agency Court Billing Agency Bond Type Bond Amount Warrant/Citation# Description
Feb 13 3:21 PM LCSO SUP LCSC No Bail $0 W SEX OFF FAIL REG/FELONY

  21. Here and there says:

Failing to register as a sex offender is news-worthy to me! Who, Where, Why, When, and why not?? Please, update the report? Thanks!
