News brief: Trial for Lewis County museum embezzlement case may be unnecessary

CHEHALIS – Instead of a trial as expected this week for the former director of the Lewis County Historical Museum arrested after the discovery the endowment fund of more than $460,000 was drained, attorneys are attempting to work out a plea deal.

“We’re hoping we can resolve it by Thursday,” Lewis County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Will Halstead said today.

Deborah Sue Knapp, 53, was charged with multiple counts of first-degree theft in December 2011.

Prosecutors alleged Knapp routinely issued herself extra pay through payroll draws and used the museum debit card for personal expenses.

She is scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday when attorneys plan to either have a deal in place, or schedule a new trial date, Halstead said.

Knapp has pleaded not guilty and is free on an unsecured bond.

Monkey’s Uncle, in response to your comment, I know where your coming from about the people in the Library. One day I had a battery alarm going off on my computer and they told me to stop the noise. I told them I cannot believe you just said that, the lady’s at the desk are rude and noisy and carry on with loud conversations why everyone else is supposed to be quiet, Give a cop power they abuse it,. give a library worker power they abuse it also. Just a simple observation from experience’s I have had there. They also have a large homeless population using the facility to keep out of the cold during the day. Security is constantly harassing people that are down on there luck. Frankly City Officials are repeatedly violating the public’s trust. But when the President of the United States is a Treasonous Teleprompter reader any thing goes in America Now. Even the Library is not safe.

I know what you’re talking about regarding the Centralia branch of the timberland library. Talk about over staffed! I see three people at the check out desk, of course most people use the self check out.
Two to three people at the information desk, what they do all day, I have no idea. The one with glasses and curly hair monitors who’s on what computer. He walked up to me once as I was using a computer that some one was done using, but hadn’t signed out on, so I just keep using the time alloted on it. It clearly say’s on your library card, the card holder is responsible for any use on their card.( no I wasn’t looking at porn, it was a filtered computer) He refers to me by name, saying i’m using some one elses time unauthorised.
Then threatens if I do it again, I’ll be banned from using the computers.
The security guy, I’ve seen him walk up to people on computers while wearing ear buds, and ask them to turn down the volume. On one occasion he asked someone who was right next to me on a computer to turn their volume down, I wasn’t even aware they were listening to any audio, as I couldn’t hear it 15″ away! Yet some old coggers’ will be talking at the top of their lungs’ like they’re out in a cow pasture and he say’s nothing. Once I over heard him telling one of the information desk people how he’d got pictures of some individual both entering and leaving the building.Draw your own conclusions as too what that’s all about.

DCE, I wish that you hadn’t brought up the library! I visit the Centralia office whenever I can stomach it, and that’s too much. The rates on OD books are crazy, they don’t return fees paid for lost books found (you know it takes about one month for a book to be so late it’s “lost”, and good luck getting your money back, minus the $4.50 in late fees. Not pleasant on a $30 book!). I go in on any given day, and there are at least four large ladies sitting, staring at computer screens or chit-chatting with each other, while two more are talking in the “employees only” area, one person setting out the reserved books, and some young guy putting books back. One day I saw a patron with porn on the library computer, complained about it (as you might know, you have to walk past the computers to get to the childrens’ section), and I was told too bad! They reserved it, they can use it how they want! I know that this forum in about the museum, but it seems that they are all of the same stock.

Yeah I donated some Items to the Museum and was even a member, but now that I see Lewis County Officials for what they Really Are. “Tax Feeders” No Seat Belts Smoking in Cars, Pilfering the Librarey Funds and Just plain old Just driving through Town just to pick up a pay check. 🙁

Wow it so amazing to watch the theme of conversation go from somone who commited a crime to McDonalds bashing. You guys keep me chuckling…thanks.

I dream of the day when Ronald McDonald is publicly executed by being submerged in a boiling vat of lard. Let justice shine!

  7. LCS Reader says:

You don’t even have to have a urine test to work at McDonald’s. They will literally hire ANYBODY. I don’t even think you have to be legal…
I agree with Disgusted, she should be forced to pay back every penny. Whatever it takes, but every penny should be paid back to the museum.

  8. OldLongJohnson says:

“who wants to hire a thief?”

McDonald’s will hire anybody who can pass a urine test. That’s the measure by which nearly all americans who are working in private industry are judged.

Companies get HUGE discounts from insurance companies when they do urine testing. Many of the cooler companies will let employees know weeks in advance before a company drug test, ensuring that they keep the smart ones. lol

  9. Disgusted (The Original) says:

She’ll probably do time, but they are trying to avoid the expense of a trial. And this greedy hag should have to work at McDonald’s for the rest of her life and have half her meager paycheck taken from her until she pays back all of her fines and every penny of what she stole . . . but then, who wants to hire a thief?

  10. LCR says:

Seriously. Way to go, Lewis County. With her pleading not guilty instead of Alfording it or something? I just shake my head.

  11. jan says:

How is this impossible for her not to do some time.
