The (Longview) Daily News reports that seven seriously sickened bald eagles’ illnesses were traced to a Winlock property where the birds fed on the carcasses of horses which had been euthanized early last week.

Horse owner Debra Dwelly told reporters she had no idea delaying the animals’ burial could create the toxic hazard, until federal wildlife officials visited her on Sunday, according to The Daily News.

  1. Free Air says:

This is an excellent example of why you should not use poisons around the farm. When a rat or mouse gets poisoned it normally goes outside for water then dies. Before it dies, it often just staggers in circles. Any hawk or owl that sees the now “injured” rodent pounces down for the kill, then becomes poisoned itself. Less natural predators = more rodents! Our neighbor once had half a dozen of their ducks die overnight, only to realize that the slug bait they put out resulted in their own ducks eating poisoned slugs.
    Think People, THINK!

Agreed, OLJ. Ignorance ISN’T an excuse. If your friend’s backhoe “breaks down,” then rent another one or (as you suggested) grab a damned shovel and start digging. What did she think was going to happen after she left a dead horse (loaded with chemicals you used to kill it) to rot in a field?

  3. hmmm says:

Can one say big trouble! you know the maximal rights people will be all over her butt, among other agencies! How stupid can she be?

  4. OldLongJohnson says:

I guess in today’s lazy world, not having access to a backhoe gives some lazy asshole the excuse not to get up off their fat rumps and dig a f%*king hole with a shovel!

Typical, “I’m to good to actually dig a hole or hire somebody attitude.”

Well, look where THAT kind of attitude gets you! Front page on Loser County Sirens.

  5. Mike says:

Ms. Dwelly should have known that it was illegal to not properly dispose of a carcass and should have taken efforts to bury those horses after her friend’s backhoe broke down. Pretty flimsy excuse.

I suspect she is going to be in deep doo doo.

They put deadly poison into a horse and then leave the horse on the ground to be fed upon by wild animals and they “didn’t know any better”?!?!?!

How is it possible for people to be so f#*king stupid???

Poor innocent symbols of American freedom! Poisoned by an ignorant idiot.

I hope the Fed make those dumbasses feel the FULL extent of the law.

    Ignorance is NOT an excuse.
