Sharyn’s Sirens: Daily police and fire roundup

CAR STOLEN FROM U.S. TREASURY STOPPED IN CHEHALIS

• Police descended upon the Chehalis Industrial Park area last night after a teenager fled a stolen car pulled over on Interstate 5. Trooper Tara Hicks said it was around 6:20 p.m. when she stopped the northbound vehicle near milepost 73 for failing to keep right except for passing. There were four occupants, but one of them ran away, according to Hicks. A Chehalis police dog and its partner subsequently located the 18-year-old suspect – from Antioch, Calif. – in the area of Jackson Highway and Rush Road, police said. He was taken to the hospital to be treated and was booked into the Lewis County Jail along with two others. A juvenile male was booked at the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center. Hicks said the 2007 Buick Lucerne belonged to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and was listed stolen out of Pittburg, Calif. Prosecutors declined to file charges and the three adults were scheduled to be released from jail this afternoon. Hicks said the investigation is ongoing.

Yes, I’m aware that it’s illegal, but I wasn’t aware that it was a primary offense, one that they normally pull people over for. And it’s quite obvious to anyone that does much driving that this is not enforced in a uniform manner. Frankly, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of someone actually being pulled over for it. Just kind of interesting to me.

I’m a little alarmed that a car can be pulled over for “failing to keep right except for passing”. Yes, it’s annoying when someone camps in the passing lane… but I wasn’t aware it was a “pull-over-able” offense.
Sounds to me like they just wanted an excuse to pull these kids over, then found out these kids had friends in high places so released them. Perhaps, also, since it was a Treasury Dept. car they wanted to keep it hush-hush because who knows where it was when it was stolen. Who knows? But I am flabbergasted that the cops can pull you over for being in the left lane if you aren’t actively passing anyone. If they did that to everyone, the city and county coffers would be overflowing!

This sounds like some kind of federal cover-up.

  6. So I guess the message here is that if you want to steal from the Federal Government go to California. One stolen car with one adult and two juveniles in it going through 3 states if they went straight up I-5. eluding a police officer in Washington state, passion of a stolen government car and who knows what other charges are here. This tells me a couple of things one that someone in the car parents work for the feds, state, city officials or it is easier to prosecute someone local or better yet let the thief’s off and prosecute the innocent ones. Go to see are tax payer money is being used in a good way again. Why even stop the car or chase the person with a dog if they are not going to prosecute anyone. HAPPY NEW YEAR lets go get a car and ride in it.
