DOG TREATS AS WEAPON
• A 35-year-old Centralia woman was jailed after she reportedly threw a jar of dog treats at her boyfriend’s head during an argument. Police responding about 4:20 p.m. on Friday to the 500 block of South Diamond Street arrested Cristy L. Smiley for fourth-degree assault and booked her into the Lewis County Jail, according to the Centralia Police Department.
OFFICER SPIT AT
• A 16-year-old boy was booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center overnight after an incident at the 1000 block of Belmont Avenue in Centralia. Police responding about 1:40 a.m. today say the teen spit on an officer, according to the Centralia Police Department. He faces possible charges of third-degree assault as well as resisting arrest and being a minor in possession of alcohol, according to police.
THEFT
• Centralia police were called about 10:40 a.m. yesterday to the 1800 block of Taylor Street regarding the theft of money from a garage sale.
FRAUD
• Centralia police took a report on Friday afternoon from the 600 block of Bengal Court about checks which had been stolen and are now being used.
SEX CRIME ALLEGED
• A 22-year-old Chehalis resident was arrested in Oregon on Friday for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl, a friend of his sister’s. Oregon State Police say Shane A. Ware was staying with relatives in Josephine County, and in March was texting with the girl, made arrangements to pick her up in Grants Pass, bought alcohol for her and later had unlawful sexual contact with her. He was booked into the Josephine County Jail for second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to Oregon State Police.
ELECTRICAL FIRE IN CHEHALIS
• Fire broke out inside an exterior wall in a Chehalis house yesterday, but someone was home and helped keep it in check until the fire department arrived. Firefighters called just after 11 a.m. to the 1400 block of Southwest Johnson Street learned the man was heading out through the back porch when he smelled smoke and then saw flames on the outside of the rental home. “He and his girlfriend tried to put it out with buckets of water, and then went next door and grabbed a hose,” Chehalis Fire Department Capt. Ted McCarty said. It was an older home with the old knot and tube wiring, McCarty said. He expects that had something to do with it, he said.
WINLOCK FIRE A MYSTERY
• Fire Investigator Ted McCarty said he could not find a cause for the fire on Thursday evening that destroyed an old detached garage and a larger outbuilding on Anterim Road next to Interstate 5 north of Winlock. “It’s a mystery,” he said. “I couldn’t find anything as to why it started.” Firefighters from four departments responded to the calls that came in just after 7 p.m., many of them from passing motorists. The 29-year-old resident had a car that didn’t run parked inside which burned and lost other belongings stored there, according to McCarty. There was an extension cord he used for power, which he would plug in at the house when he needed light out there, McCarty said. But it was unplugged.
