News brief: Salkum man dead after shooting

By Sharyn  L. Decker
Lewis County Sirens news reporter

The victim of last night’s shooting in Salkum didn’t survive.

Aid and deputies were called about 8:10 p.m. after a reported dispute between neighbors in which a shot or shots were fired.

Twenty-eight-year-old Travis Shive was transported by ambulance to Providence Centralia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office last night said detectives were questioning a Salkum man after the incident on the 200 block of Stowell Road. It’s unknown if any arrest has been made.

Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod said his office was contacted about 9:30 p.m. or 10 o’clock about the death and Shive, a Salkum resident, was transported to the coroner’s office. An autopsy is expected on Tuesday, McLeod said.

Chill, Deb. All comments here have to go through a moderator first before they’re posted and there isn’t someone doing that 24/7. Sometimes you have to wait, especially on weekends, but I think Sharyn is a lot better than most at NOT keeping things from being posted because there’s some pretty incendiary stuff that gets through. As you can see, you made it.

  2. You are not even allowing condolences! Shame on you!

  6. rip travis says:

okay for all the people that have something bad to say about travis or that he was at fault for any reason check it out…the dude that shot him lived literally right across the street so…if you were about anything in life i would hope if someone shot your dog that u would go say something and obviously u would be upset you incompitent lames…he wasnt armed and he went to see what the hell the guy had to say for himself…right in the middle of town with pleeeeenty of witnesses why was this guy “scared enough” to shoot someone to death when there were kids and adults around.if the man was in danger he shouldve called the police just like everyone else in lewis county is TOLD to do…travis was a good person defending what was his…IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH A TOWN FULL OF PEOPLE THAT WERE NO MORE THAN 10 FEET TO EACH HOUSE THIS MAN HAD NOOOOOOOO REASON OR EXCUSE TO “DEFEND HIMSELF WITH DEADLY FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO TO ALL THAT THINK TRAV DESERVED IT HOPE YOU ALL ROT IN HELL…….JUST MORE SUPPORTERS OF THE CORRUPTION…IF IT WERE THE OTHER WAY AROUND AND SAME CIRCUMSTANCES U BET YOUR LIFE ON IT TRAV WOULD ALREADY BE CONVICTED A MURDERER…BUT SINCE HE WAS ALREADY LABELED NO GOOD BECAUSE OF HIS PAST NOTHING IS BEING DONE…..THIS GUY BETTER GET LIFE IN PRISON OR ITS ONLY OBVIOUS THAT JUSTICE IS A WORD THAT THE LAW ENFORCEMENT JUST DONT BELIEVE IN BUT I HAVE FAITH THEY WILL DO WHATS RIGHT….WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THEY ARE THE ONES THAT TOOK THE OATH….TO PROTECT AND SERVE!…RIP TRAVIS…WE MISS YOU MORE THAN YOU KNOW

  7. Funny girl says:

It’s funny to me that everyone that was a witness and wrote on this page has a different story! One he got shot while running away (but somehow bullets hit his chest) two the shooter snuck out the back door, three the shooter came out front door. The only thing I agree with is if the shooter felt scared for his life he should of stayed in side!!! This is all a bunch of BullShit and everyone involved even the witnesses should be thrown in jail, and Travis should be treated like anyone else would get treeted that just died from a bullett!

  8. wowed says:

and just for the record, I do not think that this man deserved to die, I am only surprised that something like this didn’t happen sooner to him!!

  9. wowed says:

Interesting, gun shot wounds ENTERING THE CHEST AND ABDOMEN, NO EXIT WOUNDS!!!!!!
But he was shot in the back, witnesses say??????
Yeah, it sounds just like Travis, he got shot while trying to take something that didn’t belong to him!!!!
Whether it be this guys gun or his feeling of being safe in his own home, sure the shooter could have called the cops, but what kind of damage could Travis have done before the cops got there!!!
    Justified Self Defense!!!!!
i would have done the same thing!

  10. Two sides to every shiny coin... says:

Proof that meth truly does screw up your brain permanently. Atleast he is free of his demons now.

  11. wowed says:

Deadly force is in the definition of self defense!!!

  12. What? says:

Judging by the barely literate comments from family and friends of the deceased on here it makes sense why he had a tough time getting anywhere in life.

  13. Nick says:

Ok “what?” and the guy who pulled the trigger as Mr. Shive was walking away is an example of someone who can control their anger? Following that line of reasoning the shooter should kill himself due to inibility to control their anger.

  14. Get real says:

    Meth is a bad ride.

  15. ms lewis county says:

Why would one shoot someone if they wernt being phycically harm travis did not enter the houes the shooter came out and shot him my son was one houes away playing in the yard that bullet could have shot my sin from his careless actions just to prove a point for him to leave his yard for those that are animal lovers just image geting a call that your dig was shot by yiur neibore how would u feel and he did call the sheriff when his dog got shitthe shooter shoyld have called 911 when travis was yelling but he didnt he toik it cc in his own hands and took his life travis never tryed to enter the home ,

  16. Jc says:

IF THAT SCUM BAG FELT THREATENED HE SHOULD OF STAYED IN HIS HOUSE AND CALLED THE POLICE, NOT SNEEK OUT THE BACK OF HIS HOUSE LIKE A SNAKE WITH A GUN AND POINT IT AT TRAVIS’S HEAD AFTER TRAVIS ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HE WAS AT THE WRONG HOUSE AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE MISTAKE AND WAS ALREADY LEAVEING! THAT MAN MURDERED MY BEST FRIEND AND IT WAS TOTALLY UNESSARY! SO FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WANNA TALK DOWN ON TRAVIS AND SAY THAT HE DESERVED IT, YOU CAN ALL ROT IN HELL CAUSE YOUR NO BETTER THAN THE PHYSCO THAT PULLED THE TRIGGER. TRAVIS WAS LIKE A BROTHER TO ME AND IT BREAKS MY HEART THAT HE’S GONE.. MY PRAYERS AND WISHES GO OUT TO ALL THOSE EFFECTED BY THIS TRAGEDY. TRAVIS DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE, HE WAS A GOOD MAN THAT HAD CHANGED HIS LIFE AROUND FOR THE BETTER AND WAS DOING BETTER THAN ANYONE COULD OF HOPED FOR! HIS MEMORY WILL LIVE ON FOREVER THROUGH HIS FRIENDS AND FAMEILY AND ALL THOSE WHO KNEW HIM FOR THE GREAT GUY HE WAS!! R.I.P. BUDDY AND FOR ONCE HAVE FAITH IN THE COURTS AND PRAY THAT JUSTICE GETS SURVED!

  17. Two sides to every shiny coin... says:

How about the man who he slashed in the face with a knife…??
    Wouldn’t hurt anyone huh…???

Wannabe tough guy met his match and lost.

You know who the real tough guys are..??
They are the ones who always do right, go to work everyday and pay their bills. That is the true tough guy.

  18. I left says:

This is certainly getting interesting. Family members really should keep their mouths shut and their fingers off the keyboard. I am not aware that I knew Mr. Shive at all. However, I am certainly learning a lot. Only three felony charges in Lewis County Superior Court and one of those was dismissed, so maybe the two convictions don’t mean much. Fourteen, count them, fourteen criminal traffic and non-traffic cases in Lewis County District Court. Only seven traffic infractions though.

Then there is this comment, “I can see the first shot being self defence but self defence does not mean to shoot to kill.” I don’t know, deadly force is deadly force in my book and here one of his defenders is saying the shooting was justified as self defense. If the second shot was indeed in the back that raises other questions, but we now know it was self defense.

It is getting really hard to feel any sympathy for a person who was “…loud, obnoxious and agressive” but was “….harmless with a heart of gold.” (Unless you were one of the victims of his many criminal acts.)

My sympathy goes out to the shooter. I don’t know if all of your actions were justified, but I can understand the fear you probably felt as this felon came after you.

  19. just.me says:

His past does not mean he needed to be shot. If everyone was judged on their past and killed for it there would be very few people left. Has the shooter been a model citizen his whole life? The fact of the matter is that coward ass bitch shot a man in his back for no fucking reason!!

  20. Two sides to every shiny coin... says:

    Wowed,
You bring up a very valid point. This punk, thug, thief, bully got what was going to happen sooner or later. Wanna live like white trash, then accept the fate.

  21. wowed says:

Again, a life has been lost, very sad, going on about what a good man Travis was is hilarious! Check out his criminal record!!! And those are just the crimes that he got caught at!! What about the crimes he got away with?????? And all the unsuspecting victims of the crimes he has committed in the past??????
The shooter-A VICTIM OF TRAVIS SHIVE!!

  22. just.me says:

Travis was a good man, yes he may have been loud, obnoxious and agressive when he needed to be but that does not justify shooting someone in the back as they are running for their life. That shooter had no reason to shoot him especially the second time after he appologized for being at the wrong house. I can see the first shot being self defence but self defence does not mean to shoot to kill. The shooter deserves to be charged and treated just like anyone else would be..Travis was a funny man, always lived life to the fullest and always had fun. This hurts my heart in so many ways and to think the shooter may get away with murder. Travis was human just like everyone else and sure the hell didnt deserve this. People can talk all the shit they want but if you truly knew Travis you would know he was harmless with a heart of gold. My prayers go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace buddy

  23. Darren Hall says:

I agree Ed. If you want to play Billy Badass you need to remember that Sam Colt made everyone equal.

  24. Ed McMains says:

I don’t know any of the parties involved so I have no axe to grind. I can tell any of you reading this that if you come onto my private property with a chip on your shoulder you will be escorted off of my property at the end of a rifle or pistol – whichever one I happen to be closest to. The guy that trespassed onto the property of the man that shot him was in the wrong – it is illegal to trespass and if he didn’t leave when asked to he is even more wrong. Sorry that you liked him but it was his own bad temper and not going about solving his problem in the correct manner that got him shot dead. I have a wife and family to to take care of and there are a bunch of crazies out there – if you are on MY property hollering at ME then you are one of the crazies. I am not going to shoot you unless you refuse to follow my instructions when I am telling you to leave with my weapon pointed at you. I can only assume that someone who would stand there and face a loaded weapon is totally off his rocker and is a danger to me and mine. I have a constitutional right to protect my family and my property from crazy people. From everything I have read about this incident this guy Travis was in a place he shouldn’t have been, doing what he should not have been doing. Sorry he got shot but there are alot of things in this world where you don’t get a second chance.

  25. Craig Wortman says:

Please let me know if and when they have a service for Travis.
I am so sorry to hear of this Senseless Tragedy.

  26. Cowlitz says:

Why did the guy who was shot even go looking for the guy who supposedly shot his dog? Why didn’t he just call the Sheriffs department and let them investigate? Seems to me he was looking for a fight by accusing someone of shooting his dog.

  27. Bustybabe says:

@Danielle—my prayers go out to you and your family ,,,

  28. Dale says:

Steve, even if the autopsy reveals that he was shot in the front of his body, that wouldn’t necessarily constitute clear evidence of self-defense. If he were shot in the back, then that would be pretty good evidence AGAINST self-defense; but being shot through the front isn’t good evidence FOR self-defense. I appreciate that you are cautioning people to let the evidence speak for itself, but I think you’re still making a lot of assumptions.

Those of us who weren’t there–and I assume that’s all of us who are reading about it here–would be wise not to jump to conclusions.

Of course, I still agree with all of you that this is sad. We don’t have to know exactly what happened or who was legally at fault to know that this is a tragedy for the community and a great personal loss for Travis’s friends and family.

  29. Fred Morgan says:

It is time t call for a independent investigation as it is rumored that the shooter was a lewis county DEA officer

  30. Steve says:

This is sad but it will be easy to see who was in the wrong. If the guy was shot in the back then the home owner will pay. If the guy was shot in the front then the home owner could have felt threatened and it is a clear case of self defense. Lets wait for the facts either way the lesson should be don’t go over to another persons house when you upset about something. Someone may feel threatened.

  31. Extenuating Circumstances says:

One hillbilly shoots another hillbilly, again. Next.

  32. Danielle says:

Travis was a great man he apologized to the guy for going to the wrong neighbors house and the gun was pulled as HE WAS LEAVING!!! Now what kind of coward does that?! He was the best big brother I could have ever asked for! He didn’t deserve this, we didn’t deserve this. His girlfriend is my best friend and she didn’t deserve this. They were building the life that anybody would have dreamed for they were doing it!! He was shot in the back running for his life he was murdered!!! I miss him soo much it’s not fair to lose a brother and best friend over a frickin maniac!! Travis Paul Shive we love you and miss you soo much!!

  33. wowed says:

If there is concern that nothing will be done to the shooter, then Iwould guess that maybe someone witnessed JUSTIFICATION???? I have known the victim for quite a few years, and as big as his heart may have been, he was a very aggressive and loud, beligerent person!! I don’t believed that hedeserved to die,but Icould surely see someone feeling threatened by a pissed off person in my face thinking Ishot his dog!! The shooting: SELF-DEFENSE!!!

  34. Darren Hall says:

Where is all this dog info coming from?
Sad that anyone dies in an altercation let alone someone young.

  35. wow says:

So what if he went to the wrong house doesn’t mean he deserved to freakin die over it crap you try losing a friend or family member like that then let us know how you feel so we can talk crap about your stupidity ya rip Travis you will be greatly missed

  36. sara says:

this goes out to the what persons comment. your comment makes me sick. travis was a good guy and had a sweet heart and for someone to shoot a person as they were walking away needs to be in prison travis and his family didn’t deserve this and to know that nothing will probably be done to the man makes me sick. travis will be missed very much and my prayers go out to the family and im very sorry to hear about the loss of a very amazing person with a heart so big. if you cant say anything nice keep your comments to yourself. anyone that can post something like that at a time like this is nothing but a cold hearted person that needs to keep there thoughts to themselves.. you will be missed very much travis you are in our hearts forever

  37. local joe says:

This was a senseless killing and I hope justice is served hard and swift. Trav was a good friend with a huge heart and was doing so good for himself and his girlfriend as I knew he could. He will be greatly missed.

  38. Free Air says:

Where are you getting your information about a dog being the catalyst for the shooting?

  39. trunner says:

Looks like the wrong person was shoot here. Kill a mans dog and then the owner,,,, shoot my dog for what ever reason and the table sure as hell would be the same but the other person would be the dead one.

  40. KRYSTA says:

Your comment sickens me. shame on you.. I am pretty sure that you would not be happy if your dog was shot either. Seems to me that the only person that has some major anger issues is the one that pulled the trigger. Who cares who’s house Travis went to to investigate, that does not give the anyone the right to kill Another Travis had a good heart. Today Travis’s family is mourning his loss have some respect for the family who is mourning his loss. As his cousin would appreciate you keeping you sarcasim to yourself.

  41. What? says:

Well another person that cannot control their anger bites the dust. He shouldn’t have gone to the wrong house and gone to the neighbor that actually shot the dog.
