No arrest has been made but detectives continue to investigate after a 56-year-old Salkum man fatally shot his neighbor over the weekend, apparently over a neighborhood dog getting shot.

Travis Shive, 28, was shot twice in the man’s front yard and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on Saturday night.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office this morning said they still don’t know who shot the dog, but it is still alive.

“It is believed the 28 year old had gone to 56 year old man’s house in error, thinking he was at the house of someone who had allegedly shot the neighborhood dog,” Chief Civil Deputy Stacy Brown said in a news release.

The 56-year-old, who was not named, is not in custody and is cooperating with law enforcement, according to Brown.

The man told deputies he armed himself with a .380 semi-automatic handgun after Shive came to his front porch ranting, accusing him of shooting the dog and refused to leave, Brown said.

The sheriff’s office says a fight took place in the yard after Shive lunged at the older man and then he was shot.

Brown said there is no indication Shive had a gun.

Detectives continue to talk to the numerous witnesses of the incident and the investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office. Detectives are also awaiting the results of the autopsy, Brown indicated.

It happened about 8:10 p.m. at the 200 block of Stowell Road.

The sheriff’s office says Shive was able to walk off the property before collapsing. CPR was performed by others in the area until medics arrived, according to Brown.

Stowell Road was closed while detectives examined the scene and interviewed the shooter.

Brown describes the shooter’s version of what occurred:

He told deputies he told Shive repeatedly to leave but Shive continued to yell at him.

He said he felt threatened so he got a gun and went outside to tell Shive again to leave.

Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod said an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

CORRECTION: This news story has been updated to clarify the 56-year-old resident only left his house one time to meet up with Shive in his yard.

  1. Republican Logger says:

I am basing my comments off of facts just as a judge, jury and legal team has to.
Things get clouded and twisted when you let emotions play into it just as they did when people said he was shot in the back. Such was not the case.

  2. Seriously says:

People who talk ill of the dead really need help, grow up. You obviously didn’t know Travis very well, hopefully nothing bad ever happens to any of your family. Cause I’m sure if you had to read comments like the horrible ones posted it would piss you off. Again, please grow up

  3. ms lewis county says:

Just to let u know travis knew the sherrifs were called and on there way before he confronted who he thought shot his dog

  4. Republican Logger says:

    Lewiscountyelietsisanidiotandneedsreadingcomprehensionclasses,

Please reread the article. Homeowner came out once and that is when incident happened.
You just look like another misinformed redneck with your statement.

  5. Solid 'C' Student says:

If state law is adhered to, it would be VERY surprising if the shooter is not brought up on charges. Common sense say’s the proper protocol when one is secure inside their own home, and an alleged irrational individual is OUTSIDE the home ranting. Not to got out and confront them armed with a weapon. That, obviously just exacerbates an already volatile situation. The proper response is to call the police. That’s their job. Death is real. So is prison.

  6. shooter needs a medal says:

I think the shooter needs to be given a medal for ridding society of another scum bag. Anyone who thinks the dead guy was a nice guy is as worthless as he was. All we hear after incidents like this how the person was just getting his life back together. Good riddance…

  7. lewiscountyElitesNotbetterthentherest says:

    WOW! UN-FUCKING BELIEVABLE……
WHY is the shooter not in jail?????? He took the law into his own hands and killed a man in cold blood, an unarmed man!!!!!
The 56 yr old should have called 911 when he returned into his house, he should have shut and locked the door and called the fucking police. ARREST THE P.O.S. FOR MURDER, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

  8. Seriously says:

Iee, sounds to me like your a punk ass little bitch. I would love to hear you say this in front of his loved ones. You may not have liked him but there are a lot of people around these parts that did. Have some respect!

  9. Heart broken says:

I can’t believe he is really gone…. What a hole this has left in so many lifes.. Travis was fun, hilarious, loving and really very sweet.. Its sad that people would choose a time like this to point out somebodys character flaws.. Travis was doing the best he could with what he was given in life, and he finally was starting to build a good life for himself… No point in telling heartless people not to be heartless… But for that people that loved trav, we can say the things that madder.. We love you so much Travis!! Thankyou for being apart of out lives..

  10. MadThumb says:

It’s not society, it’s Lewis County. The Wild Wild West mentality has been alive and well in Lewis County for many many generations of families. Lewis County is ‘special’. They make their own set of rules and the police decide which to enforce or break.

When people see their law-enforcement ‘leaders’ and ‘role models’ gunning down people like dogs in the street and getting away with it, how else are they going to act?

  11. Lisarae says:

Welcome to the land of the free, and home of the armed. Society is quickly turning into the wild wild west. I dont know either man, and not certain that the deceased was a threat, actual or perceived, but at the same time, lets continue to scream about the government taking our guns (which is not happening by the way). People are dying, in epidemic numbers, for no clear or valid reason. Why? So some half cocked jack ass can shoot at will, due to “perceived” threat? How many needless murders need to take place before the madness ends?

  12. sara says:

it makes me sick to hear all you people that are taking the shooters side. travis would never of hurt anyone and was a good man with a big heart. the people should keep the negative comments to there selfs cuz the family shouldn’t have to be reading this stuff about travis. I think that man should be in jail for shooting him there is no call for it. he was taken away from everyone that loved him he will be missed dearly travis will be in our hearts forever he was taken from us to young

  13. Free Air says:

There are time were we all wish life came with a rewind button.
Travis should not have gone pounding on someone’s house, and the shooter should have called 911.
Had that happened this would have been nothing more than an animal call.

  14. Kelly Myhre says:

You all make me sick to my stomach! You need to stop the rude comments about Travis. How would u feel if you died and people were talking like that about you. GROW UP AND IF U DONT HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY THEN DONT SAY IT ALL.. AND IF U WANT TO KEEP TALKING SHIT THEN U ARE NOTHING BUT SCUM.. HAVE A HEART FOR FUCK SAKE!!! LOVE U TRAVIS

  15. Solid 'C' student says:

Just wondering. Does the modern grieving process now entail monitoring public on-line forums?

  16. ROC says:

I am wondering this: If the family is so offended and hurt by what people are saying, why do they keep reading the comments? Stay off of here and other social media and you won’t see the negative comments. It is a tragic situation, but people are still allowed to voice their opinion…bad or good. Just a thought.

  17. Sluggdeath says:

It is what it is. And it is a sorry state of affairs, because it seems to me that the value of a human life seems to diminished greatly as of late. There is no side to be on about it, Its just a tragic situation for the parties involved, and is happening all to often in our used to be quite corner of the world.

  18. why? says:

why would people write these horrible statements. we are grieving, have you no compassion for life. i am discusted to breath the same air you breath

  19. wowed says:

Self defense , according to law, is the right to act on your own behalf to engage in a level of violence for the sake of defending one’s own life or the lives of others, INCLUDING the use of deadly force!!!
A life has been lost! Very sad
I have a dog, I love my dog, he is a part of our family, I would be very upset if he were to be shot ,
    REGARDLESS-
Travis was ALWAYS, loud, obnoxious, and EXTREMELY aggressive!
He did not deserve to die the way that he did.
BUT- If someone were to come to my door ranting and raving about a bunch of nonsense, I would feel threatened!
FEELING THREATENED! That is all that it would take,

  20. Iee says:

Maybe if his parents hadn’t raised a punk ass little bitch that starts fights on other peoples property he would be alive. Dumbass.

  21. Darren Hall says:

    Coulda, woulda, shoulda……
Fact is what has happened has happened.
People should refrain from outbursts as it just clouds the real investigation and the families deserve it to be uninhibited and thorough.

  22. asap says:

if the 56 year old would have just stayed in the house and called the police… the youg man would not be gone…but you all know how the sherffs are !!! they will come out and say he high or drunk something like that .but he was more then likely pissed about the dog ..on your land or not you can not just shot someone for being ther and pissed /yelling at you.well can you..when the older man got in his house the threat was over..the stand your ground law does not cover this i do not think..

  23. Centralia guy says:

My advice to the family who is grieving and so upset is to not read anything online for awhile and stop checking in on sirens. Nobody has to stop sharing about this incident for your sake. I’m sorry….that is not how this works anymore. Sorry for your loss but you will feel better grieving in the real world and not here online.

  24. Bill S says:

Sounds like the shooter could have stayed in his house and called 911. Even though the victim might have been threatening this does not meet the criteria for justified self defense.

  25. Cowlitz says:

Why did this guy go looking for whoever shot his dog in the first place? Why didn’t he just call the sherriffs dept and have them investigate? Kinda sounds like he was looking for trouble.

  26. Amanda says:

Its really hard on us family members when we have to read stuff like this! Travis was a great man, nobody should be bad mouthing him! Our family and friends are devastated as it is. It would be much appricieated if everyone quit it makes it way harder. Think about it if this happened to your family you Would not want to read this kind of stuff.

  27. Appalled and disgusted! says:

The eye witness was not his sister.. Nice try though..

  28. BobbyinLC says:

    Danielle,
If there are witnesses like you say then tell them to contact the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement cannot talk to witnesses if they do not know they exist. tragic all the way around. A young man is dead.

  29. BobbyinLC says:

Since the autopsy has not been completed it cannot be said where the shots were on Travis’s body. Eyewitness testimony is often times shaky but when coupled with the forensic evidence it can bear out what really happened.

With all the forensic available to law enforcement today they can tell if a person’s story jives with the evidence.

I would say to wait for all the facts but many people on this site are not interested in facts versus hearsay.

  30. Appalled and disgusted! says:

The first and only time the man came out of his house was with a gun in hand… Travis was shot twice the last shot was in the back.. How dare you try to portray this as a self defense case! This is a tragety! A beautiful life was taken for nothing. No person who loved him will ever be the same.

  31. I left says:

It would be a really good idea to wait for the autopsy results before anyone else jumps to conclusions. Yes, if the dean man was shot in the back, the shooter will stand trial. However, when a “witness” (the dead man’s sister) states, “He was shot trying to get the gun away from the guy! He was running for his life when the guy SHOT HIM IN THE BACK!!!” you don’t have a reliable report to go on.

In my opinion, both men should have called 911 before escalating like this. Remember two great philosophers: “Walk away from trouble when you can” and “A man’s gotta know his limitations.”

  32. Danielle says:

Both Trav was shot twice once in the arm trying to get it away after he was shot in the arm he turned to run away and was shot again

  33. Kelly Myhre says:

Travis was a good man and would never hurt anybody. You don’t shoot anybody period!! Let alone shoot them in the back. This man should be arrested for 1st degree murder for killing my friend and a friend to so many!!!

  34. wowed says:

No kidding! Which is it??? Huh??? I know Travis, and it sounds just like him, banging on someone’s door, beligerent, refusing to leave, just like him!! As a matter of fact, I recall him acting the same way at my house over my boyfriend not being home and my refusal to open the door! I told him thru an open window that my boyfriend , who he Travis came to see, was not home and to leave, and he continued to knock, yell, be rude , be obnoxious, JUST LIKE TRAVIS !!! And just so ya’ll know, he was acting like this at 10:30 at night!!! I am really surprised something like this didn’t happen sooner to Travis!

  35. ROC says:

Which is it? He was trying to get the gun away, or he was running for his life?

  36. Danielle says:

That’s NOT what happened!!! There are witnesses that saw the entire thing!! Travis apologized to the guy and was leaving when he put the gun to Travis’s face! He was shot trying to get the gun away from the guy! He was running for his life when the guy SHOT HIM IN THE BACK!!! If he was defending himself Travis wouldn’t have been shot in the back. This is such bullshit why don’t you get ahold of the witnesses that watched the whole thing?!
