News brief: Wanted man lays on couch ignoring police at his open front door

CHEHALIS – A sheriff’s deputy was treated at the emergency room for facial lacerations and bruising after getting punched in the eye when attempting to take a rural Chehalis man into custody yesterday.

It happened after a short standoff at the 62-year-old subject’s home in which after deputies knocked and the door swung open on its own, the man remained laying on his couch with his eyes open, ignoring them, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says he wouldn’t respond to deputy’s commands so they fired a bean bag round, which hit him in the stomach and drew no reaction.

They then deployed a Taser, which missed, but prompted the resident to charge the deputies, Chief Deputy Stacy Brown said.

Edward K. Baker allegedly punched the one deputy, giving him a black eye and continued to fight, trying to bite another deputy until he was finally restrained.

The events took place on the 400 block of Leudinghaus Road yesterday morning.

Brown said it began when a deputy traveling on state Route 6 observed Baker driving a high rate of speed, but then lost him at about 8:45 a.m.

Baker was wanted on a warrant from the state Department of Corrections and had run from deputies a few days earlier, the sheriff’s office said. Brown said he is someone they’ve dealt with in the past, and they have “officer safety concerns” about him.

Baker was arrested for two counts of third-degree assault, resisting arrest and related offenses, according to Brown. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail.

Brown said the deputy with the black eye also dislocated a finger during the incident.

Good Bo. You could have retorted with something nasty or vulgar but all you said was “you guys are gay” which is not a slam these days:) Thats actually kind of endearing on your part. I think there is hope for you attaining high office in Lewis County.

My buddies and I always get a good laugh out of the hurting vaginal accusation.

  2. Bo Rupert says:

    You guys really are gay

  3. CrazyOldMan says:

@Free Air – Where some people might say FU, you ignorant so and so, to me, I will always respond politely with “I respect your opinion” or, if I can’t make any headway with them, “Hope that you have a nice day”.

Also, although hard, I do recant from time to time and admit that I was wrong. Nobody is always right, especially us old opinionated guys. From time to time, it’s good for the mental health to concede to the other’s viewpoint when presented with incontrovertible facts.

I think Bo is going to need a little sensitivity training before embarking on his political career. His vagina seems to get hurt quite easily:)

I could give a shit what any of you people think. I am not after your respect. Your respect is worthless to me.

On the contrary, if you’re ever to achieve a political office you will have to earn the respect of every voter possible. Of course there will be those who do not agree with you, but that does not mean they can’t respect your positions.

Respect is earned through thoughtful interactions and positive articulations, not vulgar outbursts. There are those here with whom I have little to agree on, but due to their ability to frame their point of view articulately I still respect them.

Start with simple goals like, I will not cuss out people on line, or I will not accuse people of being Nazis just because I don’t yet understand why they acted the way they did.

Since there are some obvious bad feelings regarding the enforcement of laws in Washington State, Lewis County in particular, attend the next citizens academy or at least spend a few shifts with one of our agencies. Start educating yourself on how laws are enforced, not flaming anything you don’t understand.

Guess you missed the “Some of your points are not without merit” part. Oh well, go your own way since it’s obviously worked great for you so far.

  6. CrazyOldMan says:

@Bo – We’ve got a few crazy bastards on this end of the county that the cops have to throw a net over once in a while. Most of them are big, brawling, nut cases. If I was one of the cops who had to round up one of these guys I would Taser first and ask questions later, after I had the SOB hogtied.

As a property owner and law abiding citizen, I do believe in the thin blue line to protect me from the thieves and crazies. On the other hand, I know that there has been a policy in this country since 9-11 to militarize the police to the point where they are more of an occupational force than a police force especially in the urban areas.

Some of the newer cops are Iraq and Afghanistan war vets where they were occupational forces with license to shoot the “bad guys” without consequence. I few of those have PTSD type problems from their service and might treat you like some poor sap in Iraq out after curfew. I know a nut case Iraqi war veteran up here who is training to be a cop and has stabbed three people since returning. He stabbed my friend’s sun in the back 9 times nearly killing him. Comes from a family of cops, has been saved by sympathetic LCS from prosecution, and I hope not to meet the crazy SOB on the road some day.

I could give a shit what any of you people think. I am not after your respect. Your respect is worthless to me. Their was no reason to bean bag him. He was being non violent. I don’t care what his history was with the police. The cancers and ticks are all of you that support these thugs. Police are a thing of the past. What we have now are Modern day nazi Gastapos. You are all a bunch of idiots.

  8. King Gringo says:

    Bo,

Some of your points are not without merit and I realize you’ve had your own issues with cops, but you’re reacting to the point of overreacting. Advocating putting an officer in ICU isn’t helping you.

  9. red tape says:

He had a warrant. So serve your warrant. Whats this opening door crap. they cant do that. Shooting at him? Twice? The washington liberal SS torture squad is aloof!!!! They attempt to use electric torture on people sleeping and shoot them with bags of beans? That is freaking weird and usual if u ask me. These techniques are unconventional and strange. Why not put in the man hours and catch the man when he picks of his mail or goes to the grocery store like every other dude with a warrant. Use some creativity,… would have made a much better story and looked better for the PD. Now you could be facing lawsuits? Go back to Iraq,… piggies.

  10. bo's joke says:

you go right ahead and call the sheriff’s office bo. i’m sure after a long week they something to laugh about. bo stories around any group of local leo’s is hilarious.

  11. Free Air says:

    You’re missing it Bo.
He eluded at high speeds and seems to have a violent past, then lays down and ignores legal orders. They have no way of knowing what he is laying on top of. A gun, knife or blubt object could be hidden that way until his target is close enough to strike.
If you’re serious about a political office, you need to develop the decipline to refrain from such written vulger outbursts until you have received all the information and taken the time necessary to formulate an educated response.

  12. Justsayin says:

Mr. Rupert you are a cancer. You are a convicted felon who has wasted whatever gifts or talents you have leading others down a path of lies. You ‘re not respected except perhaps by tumors lik yourself. You are a tick that takes but gives nothing but disease in return. One day your devisive, hatefilled heart will be called I to account. You will have no defense. The plank in your hypocritical eye has blinded you to truth and compassion. You have death festering in your heart….it will consume you and destroy you. You are more useless than teets on a boar. You are helping no one. You have not and will not make a difference with your cowardly tactics. Make the change while you have a chance.

  13. BobbyinLC says:

    Bo,
I do not always agree with what you say but I would fight to my death to defend your right to say it. However wishing a police officer, or anyone, for that matter was put into ICU is just wrong. Maybe you would be happy if a law enforcement officer gets killed.

It is very easy to pass judgement based on a news report and not all of teh details that would be in an arrest report (public record).

  14. knowthefacts says:

@Bo look up this guys history with the cops. Then you might see why they don’t take any interactions with him lightly. They have had run in’s before and he does not respect authority. He probably was trying to get them closer so he could attack them. Don’t jump to conclusions about “police using excessive force” before you know the facts!!

  15. XDs says:

When you are on active DOC supervision you waive any rights and are the property of the DOC.

  16. He was a wanted felon... says:

Police have a duty to arrest people with warrants. Given the injuries to the officers, it appears they used reasonable force to take this wanted felon into custody.

  17. Bo Rupert says:

WHAT-THE-FUCK!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, I am seething about this. This man was peacefully laying on the couch not posing any kind of threat all they had to do was walk over and put him in cuffs. All they had to do was walk over grab him by the arm and place cuffs on him yeah there might have been a struggle but this took it way TOO far. Instead they attack a peaceful person who was simply not “following their directives” by firing a bean bag at him. That wasn’t good enough so they had to deploy a taser. I am quite glad he punched the deputy too bad he didn’t put him in ICU. This is an extreme case of abuse of power if I have ever seen one. What we have here is an extreme use of excessive force, a violation of his 8th amendment right preventing cruel and usual punishment being imposed upon him. Multiple civil rights violations, and multiple criminal civil rights violations. This man needs to file a 1983 federal civil rights lawsuit against Lewis County and sue each officer involved. I will be calling the Sheriff’s Office in the morning about this. I am pissed!!!!!!!!

  18. unsure says:

Those bean bags are coming out of the shotgun at 300fps… I have a hard time believing that “drew no reaction.” And then to miss a prone, stationary target with your taser? The story just seems weird to me…

  19. Peacemaker says:

He can be cell mates with his good friend Johnny.

  20. Free Air says:

Lets see if I follow this line of hillbilly logic.

I’ve outrun these cops because they have a warrant for my arrest, so now that they show up at my house, I’ll just lay here and pretend I’m dead. Pla’n poss’m will send them on their way. BANG! OUCH! Gott’a hold still if I’m gonna fool ’em. ZAAAAAAAPPPPPPPP Dagnabit this ain’t wor’n at all. I know, I’ll attack ’em. That ought to run them coppers off. Nuts. Now whats to do with these here handcuffs?

  21. Cartman says:

He didn’t respect mah authorit-ay. Whip out the taser boys.

    Childish.

  22. Chris says:

They shot him with a beanbag for sitting on the couch and ignoring them? That’s pretty messed up…
